Africa Peacebuilding Institute held a webinar on the topic “From Goal Setting to Goal Getting” on the 26th of April 2023. The webinar was streamed live on Zoom and the API Facebook Page. A total of 31 participants attended the webinar from both platforms, while others who registered were affected by a technical fault. The goal of the webinar was to help participants understand the importance of setting and achieving goals in their different areas of expertise, including in peacebuilding projects.
Guest speaker and well-known Leadership and Personal Development Coach, Mr. Busani Ngwenya, provided insights and information which was useful to the participants. He opened with the question, “Why do people fail to lead their lives?” By which he gave reasons that most people fail because they do not have God at the centre of their lives. He also mentioned that people fail because they do not understand their purpose, they procrastinate and often, lack discipline. To which he then said that we ought to break these chains holding us back.

He also mentioned that it is important to have a clear understanding of the different types of goals that exist; that is, growth goals and performance goals. Quoting Mark Twain who once said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”
Mr. Ngwenya stated that there are three foundational principles for goal setting which are:
- Values Drive Goals.
- Motivation Drives Perseverance.
- Hope creates authentic goals.
Key takeaways
One of the key takeaways from the webinar was that leadership plays a crucial role in achieving peacebuilding goals. The speaker discussed how leaders can motivate and inspire others to work towards a common goal, and how they can create a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility.
Other important aspects of achieving goals are developing effective action plans, having self-confidence, being specific and commitment among others. The speaker stressed the importance of having a clear plan in place that outlines the steps required to achieve the desired outcome. He also recommended that it is essential to regularly monitor and evaluate progress towards achieving the goal.

Mr. Ngwenya discussed practical strategies and steps that individuals and organizations can take to achieve their peacebuilding goals. Mr. Ngwenya ended by encouraging participants to set goals, indicating that it was never too late to start.
